GrillGrates Reviews

GrillGrates are sold in interlocking sections of raised rails, providing a grilling surface which in most cases is superior to the grill on which it rests. Rather than the food laying on a flat surface, the design of GrillGrates keeps food lifted, allowing for easy access while lifting, turning, or moving. We were concerned that the addition of a second grilling surface may make it difficult to achieve grill marks (as was the case in grill mats discussed below) – however grill marks came out nicely with GrillGrates.

The design also handles juices and flareups beautifully. The food stays above the portion of the GrillGrate that sits against the grill. This allows juices to fall into this area, reducing flareups and allowing juices to enhance the flavor of the meat without messy pooling.

It is possible that you may need to adjust your normal grilling temperature to adjust for the addition of GrillGrates, which may cook at higher temperatures than you are used to achieving. We found GrillGrates to provide more even cooking, and required less heat because it was also provided a hotter and more efficient surface.

Another concern we had was the cleaning process, which we thought may scratch the surface or be difficult to remove food residue. Neither of those were the case, however. The hard anodized aluminum holds up well in the cleaning process.

One feature not highlighted is that GrillGrates can be flipped over to provide a flat griddle surface, which is ideal for items that may fall between the rails, such as small veggies, bacon, or sliced meat.

Online reviews for GrillGrates are overwhelmingly positive. On Amazon, it boasts a 4.5-star rating among nearly 100 reviews over 5+ years. KNS reporter Gerald Witt demonstrated GrillGrates in May 2015 and gave it a “highly recommended” review. Readers over on the eGullet Forums also give GrillGrates mostly positive comments.

Similar Products

There are a wealth of replacement and alternate grills which can be found online, although none seem similar enough to GrillGrates to really be seen as a direct competitor. There have been a couple of grill mats advertised on television in recent years, although those products are also inherently different and suffer from a few obvious flaws. History

As you can see from the Google Trends chart below, GrillGrates have been around for several years – and the popularity seems to increase every Spring and Summer.

Epic Conclusion

Simply put, GrillGrates make grilling easier and more efficient. Positive reviews found around the internet echo our results, which found it to be a worthy addition to any grilling arsenal. Our only complaint is that it seemed a tad small for the grill we used, but it’s a minor point. There is virtually no competition for GrillGrates.
